India’s women’s 3×3 wheelchair basketball team is set to make its Commonwealth Games debut at Glasgow 2026, becoming the country’s first women’s team to compete in the sport at the Games. The Commonwealth Games officially opened on 23 July, while the wheelchair basketball competition begins on 24 July at the SEC Centre in Glasgow. India will open its campaign against Wales on 25 July, marking the country’s first appearance in women’s wheelchair basketball at the Commonwealth Games.
The six-day tournament will run until 29 July and features eight women’s teams competing for the medals. Wheelchair basketball returns to the Commonwealth Games after making its debut at Birmingham 2022, with Glasgow hosting an expanded competition.
Securing India’s Commonwealth Spot
India secured its place in Glasgow through the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) Asia-Pacific qualification pathway, earning one of the regional berths available for the Commonwealth Games. The qualification confirmed India’s place in the women’s competition, marking the country’s first participation in wheelchair basketball at the Commonwealth Games.
According to the official competition schedule, the women’s event will be played from 24 to 29 July at the SEC Centre. The tournament brings together eight teams from across the Commonwealth, with the group stage deciding the semi-final line-up before the medal matches on the final day.
India’s Historic Women’s Squad
India’s four-member squad will be led by captain Minakshi Harichandra Jadhav, alongside Irengbam Ritu Chanu, Reena Rameshchandra Gupta, and Laxmi Rayappa Rayannavar. The quartet will become the first Indian women to represent the country in wheelchair basketball at the Commonwealth Games.
The team will begin its campaign against Wales on 25 July, followed by Scotland on 26 July and Nigeria on 27 July in the group stage. These fixtures will determine India’s progress in the competition as the team begins its Commonwealth Games campaign.
Glasgow 2026 Competition Begins
The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games are being held from 23 July to 2 August, with athletes competing across 10 sports, including six integrated Para sports. Wheelchair basketball is one of the featured Para disciplines and will be staged throughout the opening week of the Games at the SEC Centre.
