“A meaningful life is built one bold decision at a time, with the courage to pursue new possibilities, the resilience to begin again, and the purpose to turn ambition into something that reaches beyond oneself.”
Dr. Zarine Manchanda grew up near Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, in a family where politics, business and hospitality were part of everyday life. Her father was a politician, minister and businessman, while hospitality was also part of the family environment. The setting exposed her early to people, responsibility, enterprise and the expectations that come with a public-facing life. Fashion, interiors and entertainment also caught her interest, interests that would later find their way into different parts of her professional life.
Life around Dharamshala placed her close to a culture where spirituality carried a visible presence. Those influences would eventually surface in her businesses, from the atmosphere of her hospitality ventures to the details she chose to bring into customer experiences. Her first professional ambition, however, took her far from the world of business.
Mumbai and the Pursuit of a Dream
After university, Mumbai became the city where Manchanda wanted to build her own identity. Acting and modelling attracted her, and she entered an industry where enthusiasm alone could not guarantee an opportunity. Auditions became part of the experience, with many requiring long journeys across the city. The expected breakthrough in acting did not come.
Mumbai nevertheless offered another route. Her interest in presentation, people and creative environments could move into business, where decisions would ultimately sit in her own hands. The earlier interest in entertainment did not disappear. It would return later, through production work and creative projects that placed her on the other side of the process.
The woman who had once approached Mumbai looking for an opportunity would eventually create ventures in which she could control the environment, the brand and the experience being offered.
Aarey and the Beginning of Service
One of the important developments in Manchanda’s early entrepreneurial life came through social work. The Zarine Manchanda Foundation began its work in Aarey Colony, where food and clothing were distributed among communities in the area. In a LinkedIn account describing the foundation’s early period, Manchanda said more than 100 programmes had been completed within its first 15 months.
The work became more demanding when COVID-19 restricted large gatherings. The foundation had already conducted more than 100 programmes in Aarey, according to a Business Standard report, before changing its operating model. Later programmes were held in Andheri, including in the parking area of Manchanda’s residential society, with coordination involving Mumbai Police when crowds became difficult to manage.
Food, milk, juices and other donated essentials still had to reach people, but the method had to change. Smaller locations and altered arrangements allowed the work to continue during a period when ordinary community programmes were difficult to organise. The experience brought logistics, people management and public responsibility into the centre of Manchanda’s work, making community service a more demanding part of her professional life.
A Larger Public Ambition Emerges
Published figures around the foundation differ by period and source. An earlier Fortune India profile reported almost 150 donation programmes, while later profiles referred to more than 500 and political-party material published in 2024 claimed more than 1,000 programmes. These figures come from different reporting periods and sources, so they should not be presented as one cumulative independently verified total.
The foundation brought Manchanda into situations that demanded more than personal involvement. Coordinating people, resources, logistics and public programmes required quick decisions and responsibilities to be shared across a wider team. The experience added another dimension to the career she was building, bringing business discipline into closer contact with community work.
Her professional life was gradually developing along two parallel tracks. Commercial ventures required planning, service and financial discipline, while the foundation demanded patience, coordination and a close understanding of people’s immediate needs. Moving between these environments gave Manchanda a broader understanding of leadership, where commercial discipline and community responsibility had to work alongside each other.
Bringing a Childhood Dream into Business
Hospitality brought several of Manchanda’s interests together. Her early exposure to hotels had left an impression, while her interest in interiors and presentation had remained. In Mumbai, those interests eventually became the Zarine Manchanda Café.
The café was designed to look different from a conventional coffee shop. Lavish interiors, distinctive décor and spiritual elements became part of the customer experience. The business was promoted as a “7-star” café, a branding expression rather than an official hospitality classification. Fortune India reported that Manchanda wanted to move away from the standard café model and create a distinctive experience for customers.
One of the café’s most unusual details came from Dharamshala. Tibetan bells were incorporated into the experience, with the bells used when food or drinks were served. A small element associated with the Himalayan environment in which Manchanda had grown up had found a place inside a Mumbai business.
The café also opened around a difficult period for Mumbai’s hospitality industry. COVID-19 restrictions disrupted businesses dependent on physical customers, placing additional pressure on a new venture. Manchanda later identified both the foundation and café among the businesses that had to withstand the prolonged shutdown.
One Venture Leads to Another
The café became one part of a wider commercial portfolio. Manchanda expanded into food through Heavenly Flavours, a cloud kitchen and food delivery business, while also developing a premium security services company. Her portfolio later included a restaurant centred on Himachali cuisine, bringing food traditions from her home state into Mumbai.
The security business placed her in a very different operating environment. A café depends on atmosphere, service and customer experience. Security requires personnel, discipline, training and reliability. Public profiles have described Manchanda as the first woman CEO in that sector, although that broader superlative is not independently established across the industry records reviewed for this profile. The business itself is consistently reported as part of her portfolio.
There is also a practical relationship between some of these ventures. Manchanda has described situations where security services and food operations could support the same private functions, corporate gatherings or film-related work. The portfolio therefore developed around several forms of service that could operate independently while also supporting one another.
Returning to the World of Entertainment
The entertainment industry that first brought Manchanda to Mumbai remained part of her professional interests. Later profiles associated her with production work and the project #MeToo Meets Aarey, bringing together her interest in cinema and her established connection with Aarey.
Aarey had already occupied an important place in her life through the foundation’s community programmes. It later appeared again through an entertainment project, connecting two professional interests that had developed at different stages.
Cinema had returned to her life, but her position within it had changed. She was no longer waiting for a role to come her way; she was involved in creating the work itself.
Creating an Experience of Her Own
Across Manchanda’s ventures, presentation remains a recurring element. Her public profiles describe an emphasis on interiors, uniforms, service presentation and the first impression created by employees. In one published interview, she explained that security personnel and restaurant staff should carry a distinctive professional appearance because customers begin forming an opinion before the service itself starts.
That approach gives some coherence to a portfolio that spans very different industries. Food, interiors, security and entertainment each involve an interaction between a service and the person experiencing it. The setting, staff, presentation and details all contribute to the experience.
The same principle can be seen in her hospitality ventures. The Himachali restaurant connects cuisine with regional identity, while the café uses décor and spiritual elements to create a distinct environment. The business idea extends beyond the product being sold.
Stepping Into Public Life
Manchanda’s public profile eventually expanded beyond entrepreneurship and philanthropy. Her professional identity has included associations with business and industry organisations, including a reported Regional Director role with BRICS CCI. Such organisational roles remain separate from elected public office.
Politics became a more direct part of her public ambitions in 2024. The Times of India reported in May that Manchanda had registered the Zarine Manchanda People’s Party and intended to contest the Andheri West Assembly seat. The priorities she publicly described included education, healthcare, employment and improving living conditions for poorer communities.
Her political ambitions also drew directly from her foundation work. In the same report, Manchanda connected the initiative with her visits to Mumbai’s poorer communities and argued that public office could provide greater capacity to address issues encountered through social work.
There is a clear distinction in the electoral record. Although she was publicly reported as planning to contest Andheri West, she was not listed among the candidates in the constituency’s final 2024 Assembly contest. The political initiative therefore belongs to her biography as an attempt to enter electoral politics rather than an elected political career.
Across Business, Service and Creativity
Viewed only through the names of her businesses, Manchanda’s portfolio can appear unusually broad. Her earlier experiences provide another way of understanding it.
The hospitality environment of her childhood eventually found an expression in cafés and restaurants. Her interest in interiors and presentation became part of those businesses. Dharamshala remained present through Himachali cuisine and Tibetan-inspired details. Aarey began as the location of foundation work and later appeared again through entertainment. The acting ambition that brought her to Mumbai eventually returned through production and creative projects.
These connections were not necessarily part of one predetermined plan. They developed through decisions made at different stages of her life, often as circumstances changed. However, the ventures reveal interests that have remained consistent even as their professional expression has changed.
The Responsibilities Behind Leadership
Manchanda’s leadership story extends across entrepreneurship, social work, hospitality, security, food, entertainment and public initiatives. Each area has demanded a different form of responsibility.
The foundation brought the operational demands of community programmes. Hospitality gave her a platform for her interest in design and customer experience. The security business placed her in a more disciplined service environment. The political initiative took her public ambitions into an area where business recognition alone could not determine the outcome.
There have also been difficult periods. The acting career she initially wanted did not develop as expected. The foundation and café faced the severe disruption caused by COVID-19. Political ambitions announced publicly did not become an electoral contest. These details give the professional record a more complete view, where every new direction was not guaranteed to succeed simply because it had been chosen.
Manchanda’s journey shows a willingness to change direction without losing sight of the ambition that first set her on the path.
A Life of Enterprise, Service and Purpose
Dr. Zarine Manchanda’s professional life now spans entrepreneurship, hospitality, philanthropy, food, security services, entertainment and public initiatives. The range is considerable, yet many of its elements can be traced to experiences that began much earlier.
A young woman raised around politics and hospitality moved to Mumbai with ambitions in entertainment. When that professional route did not develop as expected, business offered another way forward. Community work in Aarey brought a different responsibility. Hospitality turned childhood interests into commercial ideas. Food connected Mumbai with Himachal Pradesh. Entertainment returned through a different role. Politics eventually entered the picture through a party built around issues she had encountered through her foundation.
Dharamshala, Mumbai, hospitality, social work, food, security and entertainment have each left their mark on the professional life Manchanda has built. The connections are visible in the choices she has made, the businesses she has developed and the causes she has continued to support.
The woman who once came to Mumbai with dreams of making a place for herself in entertainment now leads a career that crosses business, philanthropy and public initiatives. The ambition remains, while the work around it has continued to expand into new areas of responsibility.
